I lowered my face back into the water and prepared to dive again. Instantly, a piercing message blasted through my consciousness, shattering my reverie. It wasn’t sound. Not exactly. I wasn’t hearing it with my ears—it was more like a megaphone blasting from within. A statement. A question. A jolt—as if I was sensing it with some previously unused receptor buried deep inside my brain.
“YOU CAN HEAR ME?!”
“WHAT?” I shouted back, raising my head from the water. It came out more like expressed confusion than as a question. I felt as if another entity had merged with my consciousness.
“You CAN! …you can hear me!”
. . .
As I hovered at depth, the dolphin streaked to within five feet of me—a more comfortable distance. Then it began circling, clockwise, slowly—about five seconds per loop. I felt like the hub of a wheel as we rotated in perfect sync, our eyes locked. We weren’t just looking at each other—we were connecting.
And then, the voice returned.
“I’m happy you can hear me. Your fear is killing us.”
The tone was whimsical, almost cheerful—completely out of step with the gravity of the words, like a cosmic joke delivered with unnerving affection.
“Whose fear? Killing who?” I thought, not exactly sure if I was responding or just thinking to myself.
The answers came as fast as I could form the questions.
“Human fear. Almost everything. We are talking.”.
“What are you?” ...stupid question.
“I’m a dolphin, of course.”
“Who are you?” That’s what I meant to say.
“Call me Deja.”
It was a she.
